When I was 25 years old—life was good.
I was laser-focused on my accounting career working my way up the corporate ladder.
Everything was going according to my plan.
Then it all changed with 2 hits of devasting news.
My parents were both diagnosed with terminal cancers within months of each other.
“How can this possibly be happening?”
I did not know what to do.
There was no going back to the way things were.
I couldn’t stay in a permanent state of denial-even though I wanted to.
I was going to be left with a broken heart of having to deal with everything that needed to be done:
• the care and maintenance of their house inside and out as well as the yard and their cars
• their finicky dog
• mountains of financial and legal paperwork
• all of their stuff collected over a lifetime.
Wanting to prepare and guide me, my parents asked one very simple question:
“Do you want to be left with questions or answers?”
Sitting at the kitchen table, the coffee was poured and the hard but caring work had begun!
Grateful for the many thoughtful conversations, I had answers to questions that I didn’t even know I should be asking.
Things were not left unsaid.
My parents wanted my life to be lived with joy, courage, confidence and most importantly, no regrets after they were gone.
That very simple question completely changed the direction of my life.
